Who Is Castor?
My name is Castor and I am a god. Well to be fair, a demi-god. Most people know me in the context of my twin Pollux and together we are called Dioscuri. We share our mother Leda who is the proud daughter of an Aetolian king. Though we are twins and share a mother our fathers are not the same. My father is mortal, a Spartan king, Tyndareus. My brother is the product of my mother’s time spent with Zeus. Pollux and I were hatched from eggs and have led a life of danger and adventure, fighting many battles. We famously sailed aboard the ship Argo along with its captain Jason. We aided Jason in his quest was to find the Golden Fleece, a prize which would grant Jason kingship of the kingdom of Iolcus. We were not the only heroes on board, we sailed alongside Heracles, Orpheus and Theseus.
In our most epic tale my brother and I were successful in stealing a herd of cattle from our cousins Idas and Lynceus. After our success our cunning cousin Idas challenged me to an eating contest for all the cattle. Never one to back down from a challenge, I accepted. Idas was a giant and beat me easily, winning back his cattle. I do not accept defeat. So while a great feast was underway my brother and I decided to steal the cattle back. Aware of our plot Idas and Lynceus happened upon us. As my Father was mortal, so was I, and I was killed in this battle. In my brothers despair his father Zeus reached out. He told Pollux that he could share his immortality with me or keep it all for himself and spend all of his time in Olympus. Pollux made a self-less choice and shared his immortality with me. Now he and I spend half of our time in Olympus and the other half in the underworld. The brightest stars in the Gemini constellation are named for me and my brother. Our bond as twins shines just as bright.
